What is reformer pilates?

Mat Pilates, the original workout created by Joseph Pilates, focuses on core strength and flexibility using body weight and additional props for resistance. Reformer Pilates introduces the reformer machine (see photos below) with adjustable resistance through the springs, along with the sliding carriage to aid motion. This method offers a broader range of exercises targeting specific muscle groups more effectively. The reformer supports the body in alignment and helps execute movements more accurately, providing immediate feedback on your form. Balanced Body

  • Pilates is a system of exercise designed to bring the muscles of the body into balance, promoting both mobility and strength in the spine and joints.

  • Pilates can help reduce pain and improve balance, strength, flexibility, and even mood. Healthline

Regardless of age, ability or fitness level, Pilates is beneficial for everyone.

Pilates develops core strength, improves posture, balance and flexibility. It does this using movements /exercises that target specific muscle groups: lower abdominals, glutes, scapula (shoulder blades) are the top three. A Pilates workout will use all of your muscles.

Like in yoga, Pilates focuses on breathing, but as an extra way to activate lower abdominal muscles with control throughout a movement. Whereas yoga has spiritual roots, Pilates is a purely physical practice – it requires focus but does not involve meditation.

It is an adaptable type of exercise, open to all levels whether that's for rehab or more advanced strength training. Working on a reformer in particular adds resistance – you can load with different springs – and because the reformer carriage moves, you are destabilised, forcing you to use multiple muscles to create stability and keep yourself balanced. This helps increase muscle endurance. Quality not quantity of reps is what counts.
